STAT News recently published an article by Dr. Melissa Weintraub about how aspartame is a benefit to human health after doubts were cast by The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

IARC announced that aspartame, the popular artificial sweetener, is “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” meaning it could possibly cause cancer.

However, a report from WHO recently shared, “The findings of limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans and animals, and of limited mechanistic evidence on how carcinogenicity may occur, underscore the need for more research to refine our understanding on whether consumption of aspartame poses a carcinogenic hazard,” said the IARC’s Dr. Mary Schubauer-Berigan.

As a dentist, Dr. Weintraub stands by dentists promoting sugar-free products, as it is a better alternative to consuming sugar, which feeds mouth bacteria. Cavities and oral disease can then develop if left untreated.
