At one point in time, many patients may experience a chipped or cracked tooth. While natural tooth enamel is incredibly strong, it is still susceptible to breakage. Dr. Ron Briglia is a cosmetic dentist in West Chester, Pennsylvania, who is committed to assisting patients with the repair of a chipped or cracked tooth, among other imperfections and issues that can arise. Repair with an aesthetic dentist can help patients maintain their natural smile and restore its beauty without the look of fake dental work.
What can be done about a chipped or cracked tooth?
If a tooth has been cracked or chipped in an accident or by other means, then you must seek dental treatment immediately to prevent further injury and infection. Dr. Ron Briglia of Briglia Dental Group believes that the best option depends on how severe the damage is. But what options are available for repair? Here are some of your choices:
- Bonding – This procedure involves applying composite resin to reshape or build up a broken tooth. The process is virtually painless and can be completed quickly – sometimes even in one visit! It’s also relatively inexpensive compared to other methods. However, while bonding may effectively repair small chips near the front of your mouth, it is not as durable as other procedures and may need to be replaced every few years.
- Dental crowns – A dental crown, or cap, fits over the entire tooth surface, restoring its shape and size. It is made of porcelain or metal alloy and is permanently attached to the tooth. Crowns are a more expensive option than bonding but last much longer – up to ten years or more with proper care!
- Porcelain veneers – Teeth near the front of the mouth with a chip or crack can be covered with a thin facing called a veneer. These are made to match the patient’s smile and bond onto the front of the tooth’s surface. They can disguise breakage and staining, gaps, and other cosmetic concerns.
